According to reports from Yahoo Sports rap mogul Jay-Z is seeking to sell his stake in the Brooklyn Nets in order to expand his fledgling sports representation business into basketball.
The rapper recently acquired Robinson Cano as a client under his sports flagship Roc Nation Sports in partnership with Creative Artists Agency and has begun the process of obtaining his National Basketball Players Association certification as an agent. This would require him to relinquish ownership of the Nets according to the report.
Jay Z owns less than 1 percent of the Brooklyn Nets. Selling his stake is necessary for him to get certification as an agent from the National Basketball Players Association, says Yahoo.
Jay Z who is married to Beyonce helped in rebranding the team including designing the team's uniform and choosing the colours.
“I would say (Jay-Z) had an enormous amount to do with the re-branding of the team,” Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo said before Tuesday’s game against the 76ers. “I was not close to it at all, but from what I heard and what I read and saw, he was huge — it would be hard to overstate how important he was to the rebranding.
"So it would be disappointing (if he left the Nets). I would be disappointed. I like his involvement with our team."
