The sisters, who have dominated women’s tennis in the last decade, amassing a combined total of 35 singles and doubles grand slam titles, are embarking on a two countries visit in Africa with their mother to promote women’s tennis and empowerment of women on the continent. For Venus, it is her first time in Africa.
They have already touched down on the continent and are currently in Nigeria, the first stop of their two countries visit. The duo has already debunked rumors they have a Nigerian origin.
“I’d love to say I’m from Africa, but we’re from the United States and we‘re proud to be from there as well,” she told reporters in Nigeria’s business hub of Lagos on Wednesday, after a Nigerian reporter asked if perhaps she was originally from Nigeria.
“But my mom named my sister (Venus) after an African name,” she quipped. They will proceed to South Africa from Nigeria before returning home. The match will be showing on SuperSport the Official Media Partner for the tour and will broadcast live from Nigeria on Friday (from 11.15am CAT on SS5 and SS9).
